College Essay Final
Stanford
Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.
2,340 miles. That's the distance from Hawaii–where I come from to Stanford where we will be. Hi, future roommate my name is Kylan N. Tomita and yes, I am from Hawaii. But don't ask me how to surf, because I'm not very good at that myself. Although, I can tell you stories about what Hawaii is like, unless you are from Hawaii as well–which would be even more cool.
Since we both are going to Stanford it's obvious that we both want to excel. So I hope you don't mind if I ask you repeatedly for notes or help with schoolwork. I just have an addiction for getting things correct the first time and getting homework and school out of the way first; even if that means staying up all night trying to get it done. Don't worry though, I will be courteous and I will be glad to return the favor and help you with anything you need help with even if that favor is turning the other way when I sleep so you can keep your light on and finish your work.
Don't be offended if I try to be funny and crack a joke about you once in a while–actually pretty frequently. Just laugh, because I don't mean it in any bad ways. I just like to have a little fun once in a while. I would also like to avoid all conflicts if possible–I am a fairly peaceful person, but if not than I'm sure that we can work something out. I also, like sharing things, so I hope you don't mind if I use your shampoo once in a while or ask for folder paper, we can take turns buying more toiletries and supplies.
I'm also a pretty neat person. Not to a point where you might catch me cleaning your space, but I will organize the room from time to time, and so I hope you aren't to messy. In my house we take our footwear off when we enter. I hope that we can work out a similar agreement and not feel the need to wear shoes indoors. I wouldn't want to track mud right by my bed, nonetheless your bed either.
Well roommate that's a little about me, of course there is more but I'll leave it at that until we meet in person.
So, what are you like?

College Essay
Stanford
Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.
Everybody has a few quirks that make them unique. For example, when ever I drive through a long tunnel, I see if I can hold my breath all the way till the end. But don't worry, if I'm driving us around, I will be sure not to pass out; but that doesn't mean I will let you win that easily—I can promise you that.
I also have bad vision, a -1.25 to be specific. Although, isn't that why they make contacts? Well you won't see me with my glasses on, or probably even see my glasses at all because I probably won't even have them. Not that I will loose them, but because I just don't like the way they make me feel. When I wear them it's like an invisible barrier that's in my way when I try to do something.
During the colder months I would like to feel the cool soft carpet on my feet. And because I'm from Hawaii, where we don't wear our shoes inside. So I hope you don't mind if I walk barefoot.
I'm not an absolute clean freak, but I do like it when where I sleep is pretty organized and not to cluttered. Don't worry though, it's not like I would go and organize all of your belongings—that's just a little weird.
I would consider myself to have some ingenuity. So if anything breaks or we need to come up with a clever invention to turn the lights off without getting out of bed, I think I can figure something out.
Since, we would be spending a good amount of time together I would love to go on some cool adventures maybe catch a game at the maples pavilion and than go cruising around palo alto, just as long as we don't do anything illegal.
Finally, if you see me laughing or smiling for no reason, I'm probably not laughing at you. Sometimes out of the blue I will remember something that was really funny and for some odd reason it will just pop up into my head later on. One time one of my friends caught the volleyball in the middle of a game and I couldn't stop laughing for that whole week.

Paragraph Thing
It was the weirdest and scariest moment of my life. I didn't know what everyone was looking at until I looked up as well. It was silver metallic and had a orange-red streak trailing behind it as it flew right above me and the growing crowd of spectators. Than the mysterious flying object came to an abrupt halt mid air, the orange-red streak faded into thin air and than everything grew silent. I felt my heart starting to beat faster and harder, with sweat starting to form on the sides of my face. The glass on top of the silver frisbee like object was all black with no possible chance of seeing what was inside of it. But, then I saw movement behind the dark glass. It was a hand, and it was waving to the crowd, but it felt more as if it was only waving to me. Now my white t-shirt that was under my light blue collared shirt was soaked, and I could feel my heart beating faster than ever before. Then. . . everything went pitch black, but I could still hear soft murmurs in the distant. I focused as hard as I could to make out the distant sounds ". . . Mission complete. . ." and than everything went black.
Today was the most fun I had in a long time. I got to play tag with my friends in the huge, green, open grass planes. I even raced my friends down the huge hills at full speed. I was second place during the race and than at the last second passed my friend Brittney who was first since the start. The weather was perfect and there wasn't a cloud in sight, only the warm sun and cool breeze.

College
UCLA (public) - When I went on a visit the campus and surrounding city felt amazing. It offers tons of majors and many activities to do in the mean time. It also offers 125 majors in five categories one of them being technology and science. UCLA also offers digital media as a minor as well as many other various interesting options.
Pepperdine (private) - It offers science and other majors in case I want to change careers later down the road. Not to mention the location of it, it's right on the beach and has epic views, 24/7 breezes and friendly administrative. Not to mention it being a private school meaning smaller class sizes and more close relations with professors and classmates. They also have D1 sports and challenge UH which is cool since I'm from Hawaii.
Chapman (private) - They have a great film school and media arts program. Chapman is also a private college and so may offer more financial assistance than a public school. Although it is a private school they even have athletics including a football team and a few others. In the school they also have recreational activities like an aquatic center and even a sports center.
Stanford (private) - Just like a few of the other colleges above I went to visit it, and when I did it was jaw dropping. The buildings, landscape and even the walkways were built to perfection. Stanford also has great sports teams which is would be fun to watch on my free time. On the campus they also have a building just for eateries and right across is a big open space where you can eat or do homework.
University of Washington (public) - The feeling of the campus and scenery felt welcoming and had a good location on the west coast. UW also offers many majors form science to performing arts along with it's athletics. Although the cost of attendance to the school is fairly high they offer financial aid and for non residents they help with the flight costs if needed. University of Washington also has great public transportation which means you likely won't need a car.

Coming of Age Final
Independence
Growing up I never had a dream college, dream job, or knew what I wanted to do after grade school. I just figured that time and others would tell me sooner or later what my plans were for the future. I was the middle child, which meant that whatever my older brother dealt with I was next. It was sort of like a chain reaction, from my older brother to me, than to my younger brother. I remember many times my brother would come home with a lot of homework and would end up staying up till 12 am doing it all. I recall seeing his drained face and dull emotions as he was about to start his table full of work. I would tell myself that I'm not going to do that when I get to his age, I am going to use time throughout the day to do my homework and not be irresponsible and cram it all in on one night. These experiences gave me a peak at what being a middle child was about.
Soon, before I knew it I was a high schooler. I was now a sophomore and my brother being two years older than me was a senior. With the same mind set in place as in freshmen year and middle and elementary school, I thought that even though I was a sophomore in high school that I had plenty time to still decide about my future. But with my brother being a senior, my mom was all over him, because he hadn’t sent any college applications or even thought about his future. I always heard my mom telling my older brother “stop playing games and watching movies, you still need to make a list of colleges that you want to apply to,” and my brother would always reply “I will I will, don’t worry I still have time.” As weeks went by my brother had still not sent out any applications, and my mom continued to remind him. Gradually I began hearing my mom reminding him more often than not. At first I just tuned out because my mom hadn’t been talking directly to me. But, after constantly hearing the same thing over and over again I couldn’t help but listen in every so often, and slowly I picked up on what my mom was saying.
She wanted my brother to be responsible for his own future, and not be so dependent on our parents and time to dictate what he would do later in life. . . she wanted him to be independent. Something that I picked up on, before it hit me head on. Although it wasn't a few words that instantly made me understand that I need to be independent, it was the constant repeating of my mom saying "you aren't always going to have us to make your discussions for you." Since I was the middle child I had the same theory like my older brother "I have time, don't worry." But, after witnessing my brother facing the consequences of not being responsible for himself, it was a glimpse of the future for me. That if I didn't start preparing now and become independent that I would just repeat history. Something that I didn't want to do because the stress that came with my brother not being prepared was something that I don't want to be apart of. I also didn't want to see my mom getting irritated at me for not being responsible, even when I had warnings along the way.
Now I know what to expect in the fast approaching future and have already began thinking about college and what I really am interested in. Something I may have never thought about till senior year. I've narrowed my choice to the west coast schools, preferably California or Oregon and am considering a job in science. Now I no longer wait for other people to do things for me, instead now I actually do things independently and right on time, because I know that even though the future seems like miles away it's really already here. In life you aren’t always going to be surrounded by others who you can get help off of, even though it would be nice too. You need to be able to make decisions independently, because in the end it’s your life that is impacted good or bad.

Abstract & Concrete
The concert was amazing, the music was so loud and everyone was jumping to the sound of the beat. Than Justin Bieber took off his shirt and I started crying tears of joy. He is so good looking and his abs are so sharp. After the show I got to meet him and he signed all of my 83 pictures of him. Later I asked him for a picture for Facebook and so I tagged him in it and than he liked the picture and even followed me after. This concert of Justin Beiber was the best.
My grandma still has her own secrets. Me, my grandma and grandpa were going through her old belongings. She pulled out a flower vase, with red roses and blue roses all over it. Next she pulled out an old china plate, the design was kind of starting to fade but made it look even more antique. Than slowly she pulled out a long silvery and held it up and smiled with a wide grin. She told us is was from a movie shoot and was just a prop, since when she was young she was an actor, which I never even knew about.
People in the military make the biggest sacrifices ever. Not only do they risk their lives, by putting themselves in front of firing bullets and deadly explosives. But, they have to sacrifice being away from their kids and family. The tight hugs from all of their loved ones as they see their hero for the first time since the deployment. Followed by funny stories and late night drives around the peaceful neighborhood. Not to mention the smiles that their family has on their face reaching from one side of their face all the way to the other.

Honolulu, Hi 96805
Dear Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii,
My family has been buying your products for a very long time now, and have always been satisfied and grateful for your competitive prices and quality.
However just recently we have been having some problems with your 1 gallon plastic milk cartons. When pouring milk from your milk carton just last week I noticed flakes of dried milk or excess plastic on the outside of the top of the opening. I thought that it was nothing, because I never had this problem before with you guys. But, when I was pouring the milk some of the excess plastic or dried milk started to fall off into my cup that I was pouring into. I then got mad because I had poured almost the whole cup and now had to dump out the milk that was in the cup because the flakes had fallen in. I’m not sure if this is plastic or dried milk or even something else, but whatever it is I don’t think that it was purposely meant to be on the cartons. I never had problems with your milk cartons before until recently, I don’t know if you are doing something different in the process or not. But, I don’t think that it is fair to customers to have to waste money on milk because there was a problem with the manufacturing.
In addition, I know that sometimes things happen. But, this problem wasn't a one time thing. We had bought another milk carton as well from you guys, and it had the same problem. Again, I'm not sure if it was a manufacturing issue, but it seemed after as if it wasn't, because it occurred twice.
Through all of this, we have never had a problem with your guys’ milk cartons or milk. We love how you guys are an island based company and do so much for Hawaii. I hope that this never happens again, because we love buying from you.
I don’t know how you guys manufacture your milk but I’m not saying I have problem with it, just a friendly concern about the product that is in the stores.
Sincerely,
Kylan Tomita

Push of a Button (Final)
Keeping kids safe has always been a number one priority. But, more than half of teens are discriminated on the internet and no one may even be aware of it. Either it's because they are to afraid of seeking help or simply because they just don't know what to do about it. While discrimination has a ton of negatives some people would argue that it also could be positive. Such as allowing for victims to stand up for themselves later on down the road, and since it’s cyber bullying and not physical it is easier to track and catch the bully. But, there are a ton of negatives when it comes to discrimination like causing victims to have emotional breakdowns, being a social misfit, and in the worst possible scenario even death/suicide. Discrimination due to cyberbullying both from peers and adults, can have negative effects on the victims health physically, mentally and long term.
Discriminating someone could actually be positive. When someone gets discriminated it's often against one's personal characteristics, such as "weight, appearance, voice, or values” (Pros and cons of cyber bullying). In the case of cyber bullying most bullies use the avenue of their house to send out hurtful messages because cyber bullying has become so easy and simple to commit. But, in the same case when most victims are discriminated and bullied in the comfort of their own house they “feel much more empowered to stand up for themselves” (Pros and cons of cyber bullying). Compared to a similar situation if they were at school with a lot of people that you are uncomfortable with and you are cyberbullied. Cyberbullying, also helps to catch bullies because anything that is on the internet is there forever, and so it allows for authority to bust the bully more times than not. In just a glance those were just a few reasons to why cyber bullying can be positive.
When discrimination due to cyberbullying occurs the negative effects of it doesn’t only linger for a couple of days or weeks, it lingers for years. “Blood pressure, body mass and stress-related hormones were assessed when the youths turned 20” (Joan Raymond). When blood pressure, body mass and stress-related hormones were measured; it showed that teens who had been victims of discrimination in the past, all had a higher chance of higher blood pressure, bigger body masses and more stress when they got older. Along with higher blood pressure came a higher chance/risk of strokes, cardiac diseases, and an increase of the body’s inflammatory response. All of these effects were still haunting the victims and this is many years after the incidents. Other long term effects that have been tested are “low economic status, depression, or unhealthy behaviors such as drug use, for example” (Joan Raymond). Proving that effects of discrimination isn't a one time thing, it's like a merry-go-round it doesn't stop.
When you are discriminated you face major physical and mental effects. “The level of discrimination also impacted these teens' grade-point averages and their health and was associated with depression, distress and lower levels of self-esteem” (Mark Wheeler). Including the fact that victims who suffered discrimination from both teens and adults showed symptoms of physical aches and pains. Not only is being sad and depressed the only effects, but psychologically you are frazzled. You get anxiety and are extremely insecure. To add to the mental and physical effects most teens aren’t only discriminated against from other teens “(60%) but also from adults (63%)” (Mark Wheeler). Teens who are discriminated suffer much much more physical and mental symptoms/ effects versus a teen who hasn’t faced any.
Although the internet and all you can do on it is amazing there will always be somethings that aren't as amazing. Like cyber bullying and discriminating, because of the negative effects it has on its victims. While cyber bullying can be a good thing because it gives the victims a chance to stand up for themselves, the physical, mental and long term effects are not comparable. So next time you see someone who is being bullied on the web, help them out because it could be you.

Push of a Button
Push of a Button
Keeping your kids safe has always been a set priority to all parents. But, did you know that more than half of teens (your kids) are discriminated against on the internet and you may not even be aware of it. While discrimination has a ton of major negatives it also has a couple positives. Such as allowing for teens to become stronger than they were before and allowing some teens to open up with others and to really find themselves. But, like said before there are a ton of negatives when it comes to discrimination like causing emotional breakdowns, being a social misfit, and in the worst possible scenario even death/suicide. Discrimination due to cyberbullying both from peers or adults, can have negative effects on the victims health physically, mentally and long term.
Bullying/discriminating someone could actually help someone. If a victim is faced with someone who discriminates them about their race. Then next time someone does the same thing to the victim, the victim will have a harder shell and won’t let it bother them. Not only that, when people have problems it usually causes them to go to others for help. And so, when a victim of discrimination goes to other people for help, it could ultimately lead to a lifetime long friendship. But, in the end, although these two positives seemed liked they were really something to consider; they aren’t because when it comes to discrimination the negatives are way more drastic than the few positives.
When discrimination due to cyberbullying occurs the negative effects of it doesn’t only linger for a couple of days or weeks, it lingers for years. “Blood pressure, body mass and stress-related hormones were assessed when the youths turned 20.” (Joan Raymond). When blood pressure, body mass and stress-related hormones were measured; it showed that teens who had been victims all had a higher chance of higher blood pressure, bigger body masses and more stress when they got older. Along with higher blood pressure came a higher chance/risk of strokes, cardiac diseases, and an increase of the body’s inflammatory response. Other long term effects that have been tested are “low economic status, depression, or unhealthy behaviors such as drug use, for example.” (Joan Raymond). This proves that when it comes to discrimination it can’t be taken as something that someone will get over in a matter of days, because even after years signs of wear and tear from discrimination still boldly show themselves.
Just like it was said above there are major symptoms of post discrimination. Unlike the long term effects above, these are mainly short term effects and a few facts from studies done by UCLA. In a recent study based off of the fact that Asian and Latin Americans are the top victims of discrimination, Mark Wheeler of UCLA found that “The level of discrimination also impacted these teens' grade-point averages and their health and was associated with depression, distress and lower levels of self-esteem.” Including the fact that victims who suffered discrimination from both teens and adults showed symptoms of aches and pains. Showing that not only is being sad and depressed the effects to a victim but a whole lot more. Also, not only were teens discriminated against from other teens (60%) but also from adults (63%), while 12% were discriminated against on a daily basis. Teens who are discriminated suffer much much more symptoms versus a teen who hasn’t faced any.
Finally, even though discrimination doesn't seem bad at all, it has many many negatives to it. Discrimination from cyberbullying from anyone has major effects such as mental and physical effects, all of which are very hard to shake off and forget about. Some of which that cause scars for life and can haunt you for years after the fact. Once again, even though there is some good to discrimination, (with a stretch) the bad just outweighs the good by way too much for debating. Just remember that next time you may feel like posting something of someone else and are discriminating them, the effect it could have on them could be one that you could never ever forgive yourself for.

Merchant of Venice Final Draft Essay
"Don't judge a book by it's cover"... When first meeting someone for the first time it takes the brain less than 1/10th of a second to judge them. Even though some people seem cruel at first it's all for a reason good or bad, either it's because they had a rough past or had a bad experience. Merchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare is a story mainly about Shylock a moneylender, Bassanio a lover in need of money, Antonio a merchant and a loyal friend and lastly Portia a slick rich woman. In the book, Bassanio who wants to marry Portia is in need of money; and so he asks his friend Antonio for help, who then goes and barrows money for Bassanio. Not knowing that he will not be able to pay Shylock the lender back, which leads up to Antonio facing the price for not following through. Between these events are a filled with judgments and tension between both sides (Bassanio, Antonio vs. Shylock). But, in the end it becomes as clear as a putting on glasses for the first time, that Shylock wasn't how everyone thought he was. In Shakespeare's book he shows us how judging someone only leads us into a world of deception, because people aren't always how they are perceived.
Things aren't always how they seem, just like how you may think that someone is nice but really they aren't. "Appearances can be deceptive. The world is always taken in by ornament." Shylock a rich moneylender is portrayed as a devious bloodthirsty man, but as the story goes on it reveals that he is this way because he was always treated with hatred and just wanted revenge. He suffered this whole time but all that was seen was the times of him being cruel. "All that glitters is not gold." Just because something looks like it's the truth and seems like it is, there is always that chance that it isn't. Shlock always seemed like a very powerful man because of the money, and everyone knows that if you have money you have power but there was that small chance that the money and power wouldn't be enough... and it wasn't. So you next time you find yourself judging someone, stop because you probably don't even know much about that person.
Racism; it means prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race. "I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?" What’s on the inside counts, not the person’s race or the way they look on the outside, Antonio and Shylock always judge each other based off of each other’s race. Just because Shylock is Jewish Antonio thinks he is hastier and greedy and vise versa. But to many times people discriminate others because of their type of race, if their black or white or what cultures they believe in. "Which one is the merchant and which one is the Jew?" In the real world calling someone by his or her race is racist, but it is exactly what Portia does. She refers to Shylock as a Jew instead of the prosecutor or another more professional term instead of the race of the person. Even though this is the repetitive theme it goes to show that you can't be quick to come to conclusions and can't judge people by something as little as their race.
Money like said before is power, and back then power was everything. "When I say "a good man," you must understand that I mean he is financially sound." The only thing that mattered was money which led to power and so, it caused everyone to become greedy. Everyone only wanted more and more money just like Shylock; he was a moneylender and the bond that he wrote would give him more money then he lent out, making him a profit. "When you remove my source of income. You take my life when you take away the means whereby I earn my living." In Shylock's life all that mattered was his money, if he had a lot of money he was happy, and so when he lost the court case which made him give up his money and belongings he was powerless and had no point in life. Even though Shylock started out looking like devious person in the end he came out looking a little more promising. Things ended like they should've started, Shylock humbled and everyone else more successful (financially and spiritually).
In the end it showed the theme of Merchant of Venice that it was about greed, judgments, and racism and that no matter how a person looks or what they are that you should never judge them because you may not know everything about them. Also just because Shylock seemed like he was a very devious man he really wasn't he was just treated harshly and had nothing in the end, even though it was foresaw that Shylock was a bad person he changed and that is why pre-judgement is one of the main themes of this book. You can't ever tell what a book holds on the inside just like you can't tell what a person holds on the inside and so, don't ever make pre-judgments before you know what the person is like; because who knows that person you thought was cruel and ruthless may have just lost their loved one...

Merchant of Venice Rough Draft Essay
"Don't judge a book by it's

brain less than 1/10th of a second to judge them. Even though some people
seem cruel at first it's all for a reason good or bad, either it's because they
had a rough past or had a bad experience. Merchant of Venice by William
Shakespeare is about judgement, greed and racism and how although you think you
may understand someone, there is always more too it.
Things aren't always how they seem, just like how
you may think that someone is nice but really they aren't.
"Appearances can be deceptive. The world is always taken in by
ornament." Shylock a rich moneylender is portrayed as a devious
bloodthirsty man, but as the story goes on it reveals that he is this way
because he was always treated with hatred and just wanted revenge. He
