"Merchant of Venice" Handout 2

Revisiting the Portia situation, why is the choosing of a man suitable for her out of her hands?

The choosing of a man is out of her hands because her father told her to go marry someone rich, but she wants someone with a good personality.

Who is Shylock? What is his importance in the story thus far?

Shylock is the guy who loaned Antonio money and told him that if he didn't pay back him then he could have a pound of Antonio's flesh. His importance is that he was the one to lend money when everyone else said no.

What is the agreement Shylock and Antonio come to terms with?

If Antonio doesn't pay Shylock back within a month then Shylock could have a piece of Antonio's flesh.

Why is Shylock so hesitant of this agreement with Antonio? While answering this question you should also explain their history and relationship between each other.

Shylock is hesitant because he doesn't trust people of other race, in a way Shylock and Antonio have racist mention between each other. Also because back then money was very valuable, unlike now when money is taken for granted.

Would you trust Antonio? Why or why not?

I honestly wouldn't trust Antonio because if I had a rough past in the beginning because of racism then I wouldn't want him handling my money. But, if I knew where he was coming from (wanting to borrow money for his friend) then I would let him borrow some money.

Reflection Question: Many times people say friends don't make good business partners, or you should never live with your best friends. Why do you think this is so? Is it smart that Antonio and Shylock are doing business together?

I think it isn't smart because then if they don't complete their side of the bargain then you would have to punish them or even take them to court. Which in the long run would mess up your relationship with your best friend. I don't think is smart because since they both hated each other and so they would do whatever it took to get the other person to in trouble with authorities and would try to get back at each other whenever they could.
